Matty Fresh – Beats maestro, sneaker freaker, and currently the contender for Brisbane’s nicest guy. PGL enjoyed some fine Korean cuisine with the hip hop aficionado, and grilled him about all things Fresh. Before sitting down to lunch, the two of them went lipstick shopping at the Mac department of Myer, and of all the questions that they threw at him that hour, only one had him stumped -
PGL – What shade of lippy should we get do you reckon – orangey-red or pinkish orange?
Matty Fresh - Dude – I do not know.
Settling for Orange, they made their way to Madtongsan Korean Restaurant, and got down to business.
PGL – the ‘fresh’ part of your name seems to imply that you not only keep it real with hip-hop values and attitude, but also that you have a general aesthetic of being really fresh and clean. How fresh are you?
M.F. – mmmm…….Never Not Fresh !!
PGL – what’s the freshest part of your daily routine?
M.F. - Brushing my teeth and spraying on John Paul Gautier before I walk out the door.
PGL – Do you Listerine after brushing your grill?
M.F. - No. I used to, but not anymore, because it contains alcohol which stains your teeth – and that ain’t fresh.
PGL – as well as being a fine hip-hop artist, you’re the proprietor of an online sneaker store (www.justforkicks.com.au) and the owner of heaps of fly sneakers. Do you wear your sneakers inside your apartment or do you check them at the door?
M.F. - I check em at the door. But I do have some rare and exclusives that I wear inside the house, such as my Nike Air Force One Chamber of Fears.
PGL – tell me one dirty secret about Matty Fresh that people don’t know.
M.F. -I like Mariah Carey, and I eat raw beef!
PGL – it’s on record that you were backstage at Nas when he toured down under last year. Did you meet him?
M.F. - I didn’t meet him because his security rushed him off, but I did catch him smiling at the person I was with that night – and needless to say, that person is still smiling today.
PGL – our sources tell us that you’re a big fan of those bubble teas that have the pearls in them. What’s your favourite flavour?
M.F. - It was pearl milk tea, however now it’s changed to blueberry milk tea from the Hazel Tea Bar on Elizabeth Street.
PGL – Your second album The Ginza Crime Library was released recently. Give our readers one good reason why ever body should get a copy.
M.F. - Cos it’s f*ckin’ ill!
PGL – Have you ever considered changing your name to L.L.C.M? (Ladies Love Cool Matt)
M.F. - No, But I have considered changing it to Isaac Haze !
PGL – Do you have a fave hip-hop artist?
M.F. - Basically, any rappers from Queensbridge. Right now one of my faves is Skyzoo – Dude speaks tha truth, and I can relate 100%. I have the new Prodigy (Mobb Deep) mixtape (Elsworth Bumpy Johnson) & the new Curren$y x Alchemist mixtape (The Coup) on heavy rotation at the moment also.
PGL – What are your thoughts on I Heart Prince?
M.F. - Love it, best zine in Brisbane – if you don’t buy it you’re a sucker.
PGL – do you want to give a shout out to anyone who might read this interview?
M.F. - Yes I do – DJ Sheep, DJ Davito, Kath Pollock – and Madtongsan Korean Restaurant, where we are conducting this interview today.
The Ginza Crime Library is available in limited supply through Rocking Horse Records or online- just ask us. If you’re in need of a dope pair of kicks, check out Matty’s online sneaker store at justforkicks.com.
